Buckthorn Management in the Altona Forest

On a cool, rainy early evening at the begininng of November of 2003 three Altona Forest Committee members (the chair, co-chair and a TRCA employee) set up the Altona Forest's first Buckthorn Manangement Test Plot. We handed picked six trees for this first test plot. Each tree is first cut down with the chain saw to just above the ground level. We then secured with screws and nails large tin cans to cover the remaining stump. This blockage of light will prevent the tree from resprouting. We will be back in the spring to see how they are - or are not doing.
