Sunday Evening Walk of Forest a Success (Post Date : August 10, 2004)
The guided walk of a section of the Altona Forest on the evening of Sunday August 8, 2004 was a great success. Thank you to all who turned out. It was led by Doug Lockrey of the Pickering Naturalist. It was a walk open to the public. About forty to fifty people attended. Click here to view a slide show of pictures from that walk.
Grant Received From Ontario Trillium Foundation (Post Date : August 9, 2004)
The Pickering Naturalist (on behalf of the Altona Forest) will receive $57,600 over one year from The Ontario Trillium Foundation for the Altona Forest Interpretative Hiking Trail Project to install a boardwalk over the wet land, build an observation deck in the wetland, create public access parking lot off Altona Road, place enhance kiosks at the other entrances and plant a number of trees to enhance sections of the forest. This work is planned to be completed by the summer of 2005.
Trail System Officially Opened (Post Date : July 22, 2004)
The trail system with all new trail markers and the new kiosk with sign was officially opened at a small ceremony on the morning of July 7th, 2004. Click here for details and photographs!

Summer Evening Walk of the Altona Forest (Post Date : June 14, 2004)
We are pleased to present a summer evening walk of the Altona Forest for Sunday August 8th, 2004 at 7PM. This should be well past the 'buggy' season so should make for a nice stroll. We will meet at the newly installed kiosk at entrance 1 directly on the north side of Stroud's Lane, west of Rosebank (the entrance is next to St. Elizabeth Seton school). Please arrive for 645PM if you plan to attend. This walk will be led by Doug Lockrey. Doug has led many walks of the forest before and is very knowledgeable and an excellent guide.
New Kiosk and Boardwalk Installed (Post Date : June 14, 2004)
A new kiosk (click here to see photograph) has been installed with the help of the TRCA using grant money from the TD Canada Trust Friends of the Environment (see posting below dated December 12, 2003). This new kiosk is located on the north side of Stroud's Lane just went of Rosebank.
A new boardwalk was installed along a muddy section of the Altona Forest trail with the help of a group of grade 5 students from nearby St. Elizabeth Seton school. Click here for more details.
Altona Forest Clean Up Day (Post Date : March 24, 2004)
For those in the area, we are having a volunteer Altona Forest clean up day. All welcome. We break off into small groups and pick up garbage in and around the forest. Garbage bags will be supplied. All garbage collected from the forest will be taken away by TRCA staff at the end of the event. Meet at the St. Elizabeth Seton school parking lot at Stroud's Lane and Rosebank on Saturday April 25th at 10AM. This is Pickering Pride day as an aside.
Walk of Altona Forest (Post Date : March 23, 2004)
For those in the area, the Pickering Naturalist have scheduled a walk on Friday, April 9th at 130PM to start from the St. Elizabeth Seton school parking lot at Stroud's Lane and Rosebank. This walk will "enable people to appreciate a preserved forest, and to discuss the trail project". Doug Lockrey will be leading this walk.
Adopt-A-Trail Meeting (Post Date : March 2, 2004)
On Wednesday May 12th, 2004 at 7PM a meeting wil be held at St. Elizabeth Seton school. The school is located on the north side of Stroud's Lane at Rosebank in Pickering, Ontario. The purpose of this meeting is to discuss the Adapt-A-Trail program for the Altona Forest. If you are interested in helping out the forest by looking after a small section of the trail please attend.
Trail Markers Coming (Post Date : February 24, 2004)
Interpretative posts for the Altona Forest trail system have been purchased. They are being labelled and cut and will be placed within the trail system as soon as the ground is soft enough to make holes. One trail head sign has also been designed. It will be placed near the Stroud's Lane entrance just inside the gate as soon as the ground is workable.
Guided Walk of Altona Forest (Post Date : January 19, 2004)
For those in the area there is a biology outing designed to introduce people to viewing overwintering buds and fruits while as an aside being to introduce them to the trail system in the Altona Forest. This is being led by Doug Lockrey. Saturday January 24th at 10AM. Meet in the northwest corner of the St. Elizabeth Seton School parking lot on Stroud's Lane just west of Rosebank.
